Do you have a relative who fought in the civil war, and who did he fight for and what did he do during the war?

my great great grandfather was a confederate who was captured during the war and was sent to a POW camp. He later said that the union care in the camp was an attrocity. After the war ended he and others were dumped from the prisons to find their way home. He was luck, and got back home safely. Others were not so lucky and came back with no home to come to. My grandfather asked him when he was a little boy if he fought to keep slavery. My great great granfather reportably said,"we didnt fight to keep slavery my dear, we fought to keep what southern heritage and pride we still had." I later figured out that he knew that the side he fought for would lose, but he fought anyway to defend his way of life.
