Is it pointless to restore an old car?

in about a year or two i'll be looking to invest in a new car. I could either go with a brand new one (not really, probably used, but still a newer model) or I've always kind of had this dream idea of getting an old car from the 1970's and sprucing it up. i'm not sure where i'll be living in 2 years, but my real question is, from a money standpoint is it kind of pointless to restore an older car? anybody with experience in doing so?
